I apply a stepwise approach to all garden design projects.
Since every space is unique, the process can also be tailored to your specific requirements.
Initial Consultation
This is our first meeting where I can familiarise myself with the garden and discuss your thoughts and needs for the outdoor space to be designed. Based on this discussion, I will draw up a quotation for the design work to be carried out.
Site Survey & Appraisal
A specialist is generally commissioned to perform a detailed topographical survey. During their visit the outdoor space is thoroughly measured, existing features and plants recorded.
I will also carry out an additional analysis, where the characteristics of the site such as exposure, environment and soil type are documented, and initial thoughts and impressions duly noted. This is also the opportunity to flesh out and finalise our design brief. This stage is the foundation to the design process.
Design Concept
Back in the studio, I will use the site survey to draw a concept plan. This preliminary design will outline the overall layout of the garden, the chosen theme(s), as well as the relationship between planting and hard landscaping features. We will then discuss and amend this initial concept to match your requirements before moving to the final design.
Detailed Design
Once the concept is agreed, a detailed master plan will be drawn with accompanying 3D renderings to help you visualise the space. A working package will subsequently be put together. It will include specifications for the selected features and for the hard landscaping materials. This information will then be used by the landscaping contractor to quote for the construction work.
Planting Design
A detailed plan(s) will be drawn specifying the plants to be included in the garden as well as their precise location.

If you simply wish to refresh a border rather than redesign the whole garden, planting design can be offered as a standalone service.
Garden Construction
Whilst the build itself will be carried out by your appointed landscaping contractor, I will still be involved with the project on a consultancy basis. I will ensure that the plans are understood and adhered to, and that potential changes don’t compromise the overall scheme. I can also source the plants from specialised nurseries and assist with positioning and planting.
Aftercare
A maintenance schedule will be prepared, helping you or your gardener care for your specific plants.
I also like revisiting in the following years to take stock and advise on potential tweaks that will help the garden look its best in the long term.
